wilko partners with Company Shop Group

wilko, the home and garden retailer, has announced it will be partnering with Company Shop Group in order to help reduce the volume of products which find their way into landfill.

Company Shop Group is a UK redistributor of surplus food and household products. They make sure wholesome, surplus food and good quality FMCG reaches people who need it most through redistribution in its two channels; Company Shop and Community Shop.

wilko will work with the group to redistribute health & beauty and confectionary items initially which will be sold via the Company Shop supermarkets and Community Shop stores.

Jerome Saint-Marc, wilko CEO said: “Showing we care isn’t just something we do at wilko, it’s one of our core values. We care about local families and also the environment so when we were asked to get involved in the ethical redistribution of surplus stock to prevent it from going into landfill, and help families’ hard earned cash go even that bit further, we jumped at the chance. We understand we all have a part to play in our wider communities and want to make sure we do our bit as it’s the little wins that make a world of difference.”

Stock can be surplus for so many reasons and Company Shop Group will work closely with wilko to correct any labelling errors or packaging issues and only stock products that are within their sell by date.

We work with businesses of all shapes and sizes, across multiple categories, to redistribute surplus stock and deliver an environmental, social and commercial return for our partners. We look forward to supporting wilko and delivering a long-term solution for them.”

This is the latest move in a long line of environmental CSR actions from wilko, including face mask recycling in 150 of its stores nationwide.

Other environmental moves include signing up to the UK Plastic Pact in 2020. The pact, managed by environmental charity WRAP, shares wilko’s aim to see ‘a world where plastic is valued and doesn’t pollute the environment’.

Other targets set by the team at wilko include making sure there’s a minimum of 30% average recycled content across all plastic packaging by April 2022, eliminating all problematic plastics and reducing unnecessary single-use plastic in all packaging and selected products by 2025 and, making 100% of all plastic packaging reusable or recyclable by 2025.

What’s more, in November wilko was delighted to add its support to the BRC ‘Climate Change Roadmap’, which further demonstrates the retailer’s commitment towards caring for our planet by becoming net-zero carbon by 2040.
