Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield wins two National Awards

Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield has been awarded the Best for Mothers and Best for Fathers accolades at Working Families 2021 Best Practice Awards

Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield (URW), a developer and operator of flagship retail destinations, has been recognised for its first-class family focus for employees, winning two accolades at this year’s Best Practice Awards from work-life balance charity Working Families. The awards celebrate employers whose stand-out cultures and working practices are leading the way in flexible and employee-friendly workplaces and URW was named sole winner of the Best for Fathers category, and joint winner (with the British Army) of the Best for Mothers category.

URW has long been committed to ensuring flexibility and catering to family friendly working, and during the challenging year of the pandemic this has become an even-greater priority. Alongside an increased focus on wellbeing, URW committed to informal working arrangements to help employees – especially parents and carers looking after children and vulnerable people, to balance the needs of their personal life with work commitments.

Further benefits include paid wellbeing days to support mental and physical health, a dedicated Intranet page and an annual Bring your Kids to Work Day. Other initiatives include enhanced Shared Parental Leave and maternity and paternity pay, to a Family Buddy Scheme and a New Parents Coaching Workshop. Most recently, URW also introduced Carers, Surrogacy, Menopause and Baby Loss policies to provide further support to employees.

In 2020, URW created campaigns on Fathers’ Day and Mothers’ Day celebrations and ‘Go Home on Time Day’, as well as encouraging fathers to take up paternity leave and improving conversations around shared parental leave and flexible working practices.

This support forms part of URW’s introduction of a new framework in 2020 – Be You at URW – to fully embed the Group’s commitment to Diversity and Inclusion. The framework focuses on four key pillars, Inclusion Policies and Procedures, Employee Development and Learning, Leadership and Engagement, and Culture and Employee Engagement, and aims to champion inclusive actions, behaviours and mindsets.

Una O’Reilly, Group Director of Employee Engagement and Director of Human Resources UK/Italy at URW says: “We are extremely proud of the people policies, practices and initiatives we’ve put in place to create a supportive culture for all our employees. We are delighted to be recognised for this by such a brilliant charity. During the pandemic, our priority was to support all our employees and their mental and physical wellbeing and also to ensure parents and carers had the support they needed during a challenging period, we will continue to do so moving forwards.

URW is committed to ensuring Diversity and Inclusion and we are very proud that our Be You at URW framework is living and breathing. We will continue to ensure we offer inclusive practices for all including mothers, fathers and carers to enable them to have a healthy and happy work-life balance.”

Jane van Zyl, Chief Executive of Working Families and chair of the judging panel says: “After an extremely challenging year for working parents and employers alike, we are thrilled to be sharing our Award-winning organisations for 2021, celebrating exceptional best practice and support for parents and carers across a wide range of sectors. Our Best Practice Awards winners 2021 are leading the way in making this a reality for thousands of parents and carers.”
