The Original Factory Shop sets new store opening targets in expansion plans

  • Retailer plans 50 new store openings over the next three years
  • Alistair McGeorge set to rejoin business as chairman

The Original Factory Shop has announced plans to increase its number of stores as it continues with its mission to become the UK’s leading local, value, brand led retailer.

The retailer plans to open over 50 new stores over the coming three years – including stores in Whitby, Yorkshire and Frinton-on-Sea, Essex which will open on Monday 12th April. These follow two recently opened new stores – in Nailsea, Somerset and Holsworthy, Devon – and are likely to create around 400 jobs with roles including store managers and supervisors.

The business also announces that Alistair McGeorge will be re-joining as Chairman, succeeding Matt Williams.

Alistair McGeorge commented: “I am pleased to be re-joining the business at such a pivotal time and I am really excited about the growth plans that are already beginning to come to fruition, led by a superb leadership team.”

This is the next stage of a growth plan for the retailer which in the last six months has launched its first transactional website, as well as a “Reserve & Collect” service available at its stores nationwide. The business is financing its ambitious new growth plan through strong cashflow generation and a flexible new credit facility.

During the pandemic, the business remained open as an essential retailer and played a key role in serving local communities as customers increasingly preferred to shop locally rather than travel longer distances to larger towns. With many stores located in coastal and seasonal towns, they are also likely to benefit from the growing demand for staycations this year.

The Original Factory Shop, founded in 1969, now has 166 stores across the UK.
