The Boohoo Group unveils their community programme and UK educational partnership

The launch of the new boohoo group community programme entitled Be You marks the next stage in the group’s proud history of giving back.  The boohoo group has always been passionate about celebrating individuality and believe that every person, no matter what their circumstances deserves to feel great about themselves.  As such, the boohoo group are committing 1% of pre-tax profits to support and empower individuals to live more confidently in who they are now and realise their full potential in the future.

Further, to mark the start of this ongoing commitment the boohoo group has collaborated with EVERFI, a provider of social impact education, to deliver the introduction of a mobile-first education resource to help young people build their understanding of data skills. This initial strategic partnership will be rolled out in 40 secondary schools in Manchester, London, Burnley, Wellingborough, and Daventry, with a particular focus on reaching young people from underrepresented communities.

The course, Data Science Foundations empowers 14-16-year-olds with knowledge about the fundamentals of data science, its currency in the job market, and its application to everyday life. It is designed to simplify the subject, providing a straightforward understanding of statistics and computer science, and the vast range of job opportunities within the eCommerce sector.  From logistics, IT, buying, merchandising, marketing, and social media to name just a few.  Data Science Foundations is made available, at no cost, through the group’s relationship with Impact-as-a-ServiceTM education innovator, EVERFI, Inc.

Data Science Foundations provides a “bootcamp” designed to empower young people with the foundational knowledge needed to understand its relevance in the job market and applicability to everyday life. Created in partnership with teachers and subject matter experts, the courseoffers a library of learning topics around data science including lessons on data science basics; collecting, cleaning, and validating data; analysing and visualising data; and reporting and acting on data.  It is designed to help students build critical thinking skills to understand and use the “big data” that shapes modern life.

Data science is a career field with exponential growth in the coming years. According to The Royal Society “Demand for employees such as data scientists and data engineers has more than tripled over five years – yet research shows 45% of students do not feel confident and well-equipped to carry out data roles when entering the workplace.”  Everyday activities such as shopping and banking are increasingly relying on digital systems that are transforming the world of work. Employers are seeking to address the talent pipeline needed for data science careers.

John Lyttle, boohoo group CEO, said: “‘All of the evidence shows that children have been disproportionately affected by the pandemic and we want to play our part in bridging that gap by helping young people to fulfil their potential. That’s why we are delighted to announce our first-ever education strategic partnership with EVERFI which will enable us to offer support to some of the schools in and around the areas where we have a physical presence. Supporting an introduction to data science is just one small part of encouraging the next generation in their understanding of an ever-evolving digital jobs market.”

Nick Fuller MBE, EVERFI President (International), said: “We are excited to work with the boohoo group. The time is right to inspire and support students to pursue data-driven careers – not only to address a significant gap in the talent pipeline but also to ensure young people’s success in an increasingly tech-driven world. This programme demonstrates EVERFI’s commitment – and that of boohoo group, our strategic partner – to helping students to gain an understanding of data science and to build their confidence in this critical area.”
