Macy’s Herald Square’s World Famous Holiday Windows Give Thanks to New York City

Thank You, Gracias, Merci, are multilingual expressions of gratitude. As the holiday season begins, this heartfelt message will be the centerpiece of Macy’s flagship world-famous windows at Herald Square in New York City. Taking the form of a thank you letter to first responders, essential workers, marchers for equality, and New Yorkers who showed their grit, good humor and hopeful spirit during a tumultuous year; Macy’s will celebrate their undeniable spirit this holiday season in a series of animated and interactive window displays. Under the overarching theme of Give, Love, Believe, New Yorker’s powerful and vibrant spirit will be evident as the season of joy begins in the Big Apple.

“Macy’s is part of the fabric of New York City. Our famed holiday windows this year reflect the power, grit and spirit of our resilient community,” said Scott Devine, Macy’s Vice President of Visual Merchandising. “We want to thank first responders, essential workers and everyday New Yorkers who came together this year to support each other and the city we call home. With a dose of whimsy and a dash of sparkle, we hope our love letter serves to enchant, delight and honor our fellow New Yorkers as we celebrate the holidays.”

Since 1874, Macy’s famed holiday window displays have enthralled generations who annually marvel at the festive and whimsical designs during the most magical time of year in New York City. The holiday tradition will continue this year as Macy’s Herald Square’s famed Broadway windows say a heartfelt and joyous “Thank You.”

A dedicated team of more than one hundred Santa helpers bring the displays to life including artists, animators, carpenters, electricians, and lighting experts. Each of the six windows includes high quality LED tiles lighting up Broadway Plaza for all to enjoy.

Window One
Beginning with a bustling New York City scene, bright neon signs share our gratitude with Thank You emblazoned across the cityscape in 16 different languages. More than 10,000 fiber optic lights illuminate the city streets with the iconic Empire State Building as the centerpiece and Macy’s Fireworks launching from its tower.

Windows Two & Three
It’s time to decorate! Whimsical hand-sculpted Macy’s elves are seen busily and hilariously decorating giant letters spelling “Thank You” in a cityscape scene complete with clapping hands in support of first responders and essential workers.

Window Four
The joy of believing is a central theme for Macy’s holiday celebrations and this window’s animated scenes showcase unity and the hopeful spirit of New Yorkers as they believe in love, equality and of course Santa!

Window Five
The holidays would not be complete without the quintessential Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade®. Live this year from 34th Street, the Parade’s signature elements – including Santa Claus – are featured in a dynamic animated scene.

Window Six
In the finale, letters spelling “Thank You” dance across a digital screen with the help of visitors shuffling the letters through interactive movement in front of the window.

Along with the six Broadway windows, Macy’s will also present new digital windows on the 34th Street side of the building celebrating the magic of Santa Claus at Macy’s. The windows will provide spectators with an opportunity to engage in fun and interactive games.

Macy’s Herald Square’s Holiday Windows can be seen on the Broadway side of the flagship store from Nov. 19, 2020 through Jan. 1, 2021. Macy’s Downtown Brooklyn will also be hosting a celebratory “Thank You” to the city of New York through a classic window presentation. Macy’s Downtown Brooklyn store windows will be shown starting Nov. 27, 2020 through Jan. 1, 2021.
