GS1 UK’s Chair Chris Tyas recognised in New Year Honours list

Chris Tyas, GS1 UK’s chairman has been awarded an OBE for services to food supply chain during the Covid-19.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) appointed Chris to a strategic role in March this year, to ensure the nation’s food supply chain integrity adapted in response to the global pandemic. Chris put the needs of individual consumers at the centre of the approach when addressing the issues within the agri-food supply chain. When asked about the recognition he had received Chris Tyas said “it was imperative that the industry came together to ensure the nation was fed through the pandemic, no one company or government could solve it alone We needed all elements of the supply chain to collaborate to rebuild consumer trust. From the initial challenges of re-ranging and stocking shelves to dealing with the human element of staffing the operations, every day of the last year has brought a new challenge. We are now facing the need for renewed resilience as we progress through the winter months and the challenges of the EU transition. I am humbled with the recognition I have received for my contribution to what continues to be a massive team effort from everybody who contributes to keeping our nation fed.”

Lord Hunt President of GS1UK said, “When Chris agreed to become Chair of GS1 UK we were delighted to have his expertise on board to help us with our commitment to solving industry challenges through collaboration. Our neutral not for profit status ensures businesses throughout the supply chain can come together with the consumer or patients’ needs as their focus. Never has this approach been more apparent than in the way Chris has addressed the huge challenges that Covid 19 has brought. This award is well deserved recognition for his outstanding contribution.”

Anne Godfrey, CEO of GS1 UK, said “Chris’ hard work and dedication to ensuring the UK has addressed the extraordinary challenges of Covid19 has been duly recognised with this honour. All of us at GS1 UK are grateful to Chris for the inspirational leadership he brings to the business and our membership.”

Chris has spent more than four decades in the food industry, most of it with multinational Nestle, where he headed up global supply chain. He joined GS1 UK as their chair at the end of 2018 to raise awareness of the importance consumers are placing on trusted data that must be collected through the totality of the supply chain.

Throughout his career he has had considerable previous experience of managing major crises, including BSE, foot and mouth, melamine and the horsemeat scandal. To this unenviable list he can now add Covid 19 and the EU transition.
