Festival Place wins Green Apple Environmental Award for Water Saving Project

Basingstoke shopping centre has once again been recognised for its environmental practices by the Green Apple Environment Awards. Festival Place has won an Award in the ‘Water Efficiency’ category for its overall achievements and efforts to reduce water consumption and increase water efficiency within the shopping centre.

In 2019, Festival Place Senior Management Environmental Steering group had set an objective to reduce water consumption within the centre. Various initiatives have since been implemented (waterless urinals, sensor taps, low-flush toilets, etc) with a positive impact on the reduction of water consumption and the increase of water efficiency, including the installation of environmentally friendly toilets that uses over up to 80% less water than standard ones and gives a positive reduction of the carbon footprint. Overall, it has helped reduce water consumption within the centre by 4,000 litres over a 5-month period where the facilities where open to the public.

Gary Cooper, Head of Operations at Festival Place, said: “Our ambition with this water saving project was to commit to achieving best environmental practices when it comes to water usage within a large UK shopping centre being visited by 22 million people each year. Our visitors and tenants have benefitted directly from these initiatives. The significant reduction in water usage has enabled us to offset these savings against the service charge for the latter.”

Festival Place is the highest ranked shopping centre outside a major UK city. It is listed in the top 20 of GlobalData’s UK shopping centres report and Trevor Wood Associates positions it in its Premier League of shopping centres.

The centre is located in the heart of Basingstoke, the seventh most affluent town in the UK and the largest in Hampshire. With some 1.7 million residents within a 30-minute drive and 11,500 office workers less than 10-minutes’ walk away, the 1.1 million sq. ft retail and leisure destination features retail, dining and leisure brands such as Apple, Next, SuperDry, TKMaxx, Pandora, Jack Wills, JD Sports and FatFace. It features a spectrum of additional attractions to appeal to the local community including Basingstoke Sports Centre with swimming pool, gym and over 100 studio classes, a 10-screen Vue Cinema, a Flip Out trampoline park, Escape Hunt the world’s leading live escape room and indoor entertainment experience plus office space and a library with author talks and workshops.
