Extra/Ordinary Rituals at YKK London Showroom

Celebrating the freedom of imagination, turning ordinary routines into an extra-ordinary ritual, Slovenian fashion artefact designer Jana Zornik and French photographer Michelle Marshall’s ‘Extra/Ordinary Rituals’ collection will be the next YKK London Showroom exhibition between 23rdJuly – 31stAugust.

The window display is focused on six fashion artefacts that Jana created for her MA at London College of Fashion, and Michelle’s photographic interpretation of the pieces.

The collectable objects represent the pleasure of simple daily rituals, with an imprint of the absent creator. The imaginary character, “little Marta” creates mechanised self-invented grooming tools. Through little inventions and alterations, the character turns the ordinary routine into an extra-ordinary ritual, creating a safe place to feel beautiful, free and loved.  The ‘Perfu_Me’ is a made to measure perfume. After applying the perfume from the bottle to both sides of the neck, the feathers can be rotated so that the perfume can spread all over the neck, creating an enchanting aura of smell.  The ‘Nail Polisher’ takes care of nails, holding one hand in a polishing position whilst allowing the other to polish the nails with zero effort.

The photographs of the collection are taken in Michelle`s unique, candid and romantic style that looks like it has come from a painting. Two of the artefacts were initially photographed by Michelle as part of an editorial story, Quiet Ostentation, for Vogue Italia, coordinated by Sara Maino (Head of Vogue Talents, Vogue Italia). The exhibition will showcase new photographic works featuring all six Fashion Artefacts.

Currently based between London, Ljubljana and Zurich, Jana is interested in creating body related, emotionally interactive artefacts, expressing personal emotions and states of mind. She is fascinated with discarded things, with the ability to see them in a different way, shaping them into artistically beautiful objects. The discarded and the valued are combined to enhance each other.  Her practice is applicable to different creative areas, with an extensive career that has so far included being a jewellery and product designer at the Swatch Group, a costume designer at the Slovenian National Theatre while working on her personal projects.

Michelle was born in France, coming to the UK to study photography and now based in London as a freelance photographer.  Her work mainly revolves around portraiture with assignments that include commercial and fashion editorials, backstage photography, and private commissions.  She favours the candid over the contrived, and exclusively works with natural light.

The collection will be on display at the YKK London Showroom in Shoreditch between 23rdJuly and 31stAugust.
