Award-winning Papadeli re-opens following lockdown

As lockdown continues to ease for non-essential shops, an award-winning Bristol caterer, delicatessen and cookery school has re-opened its doors, with support from Barclays and a £50,000 government-backed Bounce Back Loan [BBL].

Established in 2002, by husband and wife team Simon and Catrin MacDonnell, Papadeli at Alma Rd, Clifton, started by selling takeaway food, local produce as well as supporting producers from across Europe. In recent years, they have developed the catering side of the business, providing services for events, working lunches, weddings, canapés, buffets and feasts. The business runs a deli and cheesemonger downstairs as well as a deli cafe and a successful cookery school.

When lockdown was enforced, the shop like many others had to fully close and all catering and events stopped. The firm furloughed 14 employees and applied for a Bounce Back Loan to support its staff, as well as cover day to day costs and invest in stock.

Simon MacDonnell, Owner-Manager at Papadeli, said: “We were enjoying a successful start to the year, however, the lockdown meant the shop fully closed and all catering and cookery classes stopped. As soon as we began experiencing problems, our Barclays business manager was straight on the phone to see how she could support us. The BBL means we could continue to support our hard-working staff as well as keeping the catering part of the business alive while we wait for events to be re-established. I’m delighted that we’ve been able to re-open this week and look forward to serving our customers once again.”

Joy Simmonds, Barclays Business Manager, Bristol, added: “As a valued business in the community, I was keen to step in and help when the firm ran into difficulty caused by the pandemic. I’m so pleased that the Bounce Back Loan will provide the financial cushion and reassurance they need to be able to get through these tough times, and I look forward to continue helping them now and in the future.”

Papadeli is now open and operating within the government social distance guidelines.
