Andy Harding, Managing Director of Openpay, joins retailTRUST as Ambassador

  • Harding joins as part of retailTRUST’s fundraising committee
  • Openpay to amplify the charity’s initiatives through media and social channels
  • ‘Buy now. Pay smarter’ payment solution to also assist with the Trust’s latest campaign – #forthefour – this month

Buy now. Pay smarter’ payments solution, Openpay, has announced that Managing Director, Andy Harding, will be joining retailTRUST, as an ambassador. Chaired by retail leader, Alistair McGeorge, Harding, alongside Damian Hopkins, International MD of Matalan and Karl Doyle, Group Trading Director of Reiss, will also sit on the charity’s fundraising committee, which seeks to raise funds to protect and improve the lives of those working in retail.

The announcement comes as retailTRUST launches its latest campaign this month: #forthefour. While one in four adults in the UK will experience a mental health problem in their lifetime, the campaign aims to be there for the four in four who will experience a setback or difficult life event.

The pandemic has had a significant impact on retail, leading to untold levels of stress and anxiety for those working in the industry – making the charity more important than ever.

Harding will be helping build on the Trust’s fundraising efforts, which has this year gifted £400,000 worth of non-repayable grants for some of retail’s most vulnerable employees.

Harding’s new role will see Openpay established as a corporate supporter for the Trust. Openpay will help amplify the work of the Trust on social media, its website and in additional media collateral. As part of the partnership, Openpay’s staff will participate in various initiatives for retailTRUST during the campaign and over the coming months.

Andy Harding, UK Managing Director of Openpay, said:

“I have spent many years working in the retail industry, so the welfare of those working in the sector has always been close to my heart. That is why I am so proud to be joining retailTRUST, which is tackling issues that are so prevalent for many – especially now due to the pandemic. I am very happy that all of us at Openpay will be giving back to the retail community, and we will continue focussing on creating a better environment to enhance the wellbeing of those in retail.”

Chris Brook-Carter, Chief Executive Officer at retailTRUST, said

“I’m thrilled that Andy is joining retailTRUST as an ambassador and Openpay are supporting #forthefour. The retail industry is the second largest employer in the UK after the NHS, so the sector has a huge responsibility to come together during the most challenging period of the Trust’s 188-year history. One in four UK adults experiences a mental health problem at some point in their lifetime, but four in four – so, every single one of us – will experience a major setback or life event that can affect our mental and physical wellbeing. This situation is getting worse as a result of the pandemic so the support from organisations like Openpay is vital during this time. retailTRUST’s pioneering approach provides financial, emotional, physical and vocational services for the #forthefour working in retail. We’ve seen so many fantastic examples of businesses taking action to protect the wellbeing of their colleagues and the response to the #forthefour campaign so far has been brilliant. Our vision for our #forthefour campaign is for every one of our colleagues to have free and quick access to help and preventative support to manage their wellbeing whenever they need it by building a coalition of businesses and leaders that recognises the responsibility the industry has to look after the people that contribute to its financial success, and build a healthy, happy, diverse and inclusive workforce that reflects retail’s position as the premier industry in the UK economy.”

As part of #forthefour campaign, a virtual event will take place on 19 – 21 October. The three-day programme of content will equip retail colleagues with the skills needed to manage their emotional, physical, vocational and financial wellbeing.
