£12,000 donated to Southampton Children’s Hospital Charity by Southern Co-op colleagues

Southampton colleagues at co-operative retail stores have grouped together and raised £12,000 for a charity close to their hearts.

Epic running events, cake sales, funding donations, face painting, fancy dress and a pink Harley Davidson bike – just a few of the fundraising activities Southern Co-op colleagues carried out in 2018 fundraising for Southampton Children’s Hospital Charity.

The Store Manager at Southampton’s City Gateway, Dean Millar, has been the driving force behind supporting the charity after all three of his children were born at its sister hospital Princess Anne.

Last year he took part in the ABP 10k run and the Great South Run but he is already planning to do one better – the ABP half marathon in May.

Dean said: “I did a lot of work to raise money for the hospital as I’m passionate about it and supporting good causes. I try to support as many as I can and always have a number of projects I want to assist with.

“Over the last few years, I have encouraged our other Southampton stores to get involved with the hospital and we have gone from just one store supporting them to four.

“We have got a really good relationship with the hospital charity and it is always good to raise awareness of their special cause. It really is a special place which means so much to so many people.”

The total raised from January 2018 to January 2019 came to £11,960.

In 2018, the stores which supported Southampton Children’s Hospital included Archers Road, City Gateway, Commercial Road, and West End’s High Street.

Jeneen Thomsen, Head of Major Gifts at Southampton Hospital Charity, said: “A huge thank you to Southern Co-op for championing the Children’s Emergency and Trauma Department appeal at Southampton Children’s Hospital.

“Thank you to all the stores and colleagues for choosing the appeal, for helping to raise awareness of our vision and to raising a incredible amount to help us get to our goal.

“We have all loved working with such committed and enthusiastic team and hope to continue working together to help bring the very best to those who need it across the south.”

Southern Co-op’s stores support the charity as part of its community engagement programme ‘Love Your Neighbourhood’.

This initiative addresses four key social themes for promoting: ‘Greener’, ‘Healthier’, ‘Safer’, and ‘More Inclusive’ neighbourhoods.
