Zigor go green and become European Green Capital Members

Zigor Corporation, an international producer of energy conversion systems, electronic power devices and renewable energy solutions, has joined the Green Agreement as part of European Green Capital year in Vitoria-Gasteiz.

The European Green Capital Award was launched by the European Commission in 2008 to recognise and reward local efforts to improve the environment, the economy and the quality of life of growing urban populations.

Vitoria-Gasteiz, the capital city of the province of Alava and of the autonomous community of the Basque Country in Northern Spain, was selected as a European Green Capital for 2012 at an award ceremony in Stockholm in October 2010 after it showed a consistent record of achieving high environmental standards.

The Spanish city also proved it was committed to ongoing and ambitious goals for further improvement and development and could act as a role model to inspire other European cities to promote best practices. The town council of Vitoria-Gasteiz subsequently created the Green Agreement to encourage the collaboration of the business sector.

Zigor Corporation, whose international headquarters is based in Vitoria, has made a commitment to the programme to bring about improvements of an environmental nature within the next 12 months. The company, which has offices in the United Kingdom, Mexico, USA, Colombia, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Hong Kong, Portugal and New Zealand, has received a badge accrediting them as members of the Green Agreement and as part of European Green Capital 2012.

Zigor plan to use its substantial knowledge in power electronics and energy conversion to set-up a “smart-grid” installation for generation and consumption management. This will be made up of renewable energy generation sources (photovoltaic and mini-wind energy) and innovative energy storage technologies.

Zigor sales and marketing manager Jesús Maria Eguiluz said: “The aim is to increase Zigor’s renewable energy consumption and reduce the total energy consumption of its industrial activity. The expected result is a reduction of CO2 emissions associated to the electrical energy consumption in the overall value chain of goods and services supplied by Zigor. We intend to show the benefits provided, which make it transferable to any other industrial activity, especially those with high energy consumption.”
