VM students are one step closer

Four of the country’s most creative retail design students are celebrating their selection to a shortlist which could see them compete for the UK on the world stage. Piriyanka Logendran, Kirsty Hoadley, Jay Samson and Hannah Cook made it through initial selection and are now one step closer to being the nation’s visual merchandising representative at WorldSkills London 2011, the world’s largest international vocational skills competition. Included at WorldSkills for the first time in its 61 year history, the VM competition will see one UK representative compete against students from Singapore, Portugal, Netherlands, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Jamaica and Norway, to produce a stunning window display against the clock. A recent selection event organised by Skillsmart Retail and held at the London College of Fashion, saw all four given a Christmas themed window display brief and identical sets of materials and equipment to produce a mood board, display plan, scale window mock-up and a verbal presentation – all in just 12 hours. All four students made the shortlist and will now be trained by a VM expert before the next selection event in January, where they will be whittled down to just two. After 50 days of training, the final competitor will then be chosen.
