UK’s number one shopping centre celebrates 5 years in London

On 30th October, Westfield London, ranked by CACI as the number 1 centre in the UK, will celebrate five years since it opened its doors. During that time, Westfield London has attracted over 130 million customers, generated more than £4bn in retail sales and created 8,000 new jobs for London.

Since the gala opening by the Mayor of London Boris Johnson and Westfield Chairman Frank Lowy during a period of major financial uncertainty, the centre, jointly owned by Westfield and Commerz Real, has proved a major hit with Londoners and international tourists achieving retail sales growth of over 40 per cent and footfall growth of more than 20 per cent since its first year. Tourism spend has grown by 28% with Westfield London becoming one of London’s top five tourist shopping destinations.

The annual footfall of over 27 million shoppers, and a moving annual turnover approaching £1bn, has helped attract some of the world’s greatest retailers to stage their UK launch in Westfield London.  35 retailers have opted to debut stores at the centre since opening, including names such as Tesla, Coach, DKNY Men, Gilly Hicks and Bobbi Brown.

Westfield London was also the first UK shopping centre to open a luxury precinct, The Village, which features over 40 high-end retailers, among them Louis Vuitton, Prada and Gucci, as well as a concierge service never before offered in a UK shopping centre. Since launch, over 140,000 luxury handbags have been sold in The Village.

All retail categories have achieved significant growth over the five years:

•             Fashion +29%,

•             The Village +77%.

•             Leisure +62.8%

•             Food catering +77%

Bill Giouroukos, Westfield Director of Operations said: “Westfield’s global strategy is to deliver iconic centres in the best markets with a strong mix of fashion, dining, leisure, events and technology. Westfield London is a leading example of this global strategy and in just five years has become an important shopping destination for Londoners, tourists and international retailers. At Westfield London we have pushed the boundaries on what is offered inside a shopping centre from exciting retail to one of the largest dining and leisure precincts. Dining and leisure have increasingly become important attractions for shopping centres and Westfield will continue to focus on expanding this offer which next year will see the addition of the UK’s first Kidzania – an entertainment offer for children which is expected to attract an additional one million customers each year.

“Only five years from opening, Westfield London is embarking on plans to deliver a further 600,000 sq ft of retail and leisure featuring a new anchor department store, as well as 1,500 new homes. The expansion plans will deliver an additional 6,750 new jobs for London”

To mark its 5th birthday, Westfield has planned a series of events and offers. This will include exclusive items from leading Westfield retailers with Coach, Ted Baker and Reiss among them, as well as collaborations with five London based fashion designers – Louise Gray, Richard Nicoll, Sophia Webster, Peter Pilotto and Thomas Tait, to create limited edition sweatshirts. These covetable one-off creations will be available at £65 each at an exclusive pop-up store at Westfield London that will be open from 30 October- 6 November.  All profits from the pop-up store will go to Westfield’s charity partner, Save the Children. An exclusive party with Vogue hosting London’s best designers will also take place on the birthday.
