TheCentre:MK delivers 11,331 wishes for Age UK Milton Keynes

If you threw a coin into the wishing pool at the centre of last year’s Land of Enchanted Dreams Christmas display at thecentre:mk, then you have helped raise a stunning £11,331.11 for Age UK Milton Keynes.  This is a massive 177% increase on previous year’s donations and the highest amount raised by the wishing pool since 2008.

The wishing pool was designed to be even more enticing and fun for shoppers this year and the 188,028 coins including  80,749 one-pence coins, 46,981 two-pence coins and 24,542 five-pence coins prove that it was spectacularly successful in doing so.  The coins were dried, sorted and counted by kind volunteers, helped by staff from Age UK Milton Keynes, John Lewis, Accenture and

Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue service based at Great Holm.

Age UK Milton Keynes was chosen as thecentre:mk’s Christmas beneficiary for their fantastic work helping local older people live independently in their own home with support from the Handyperson Service and a hardship fund of just £800.

The shoppers’ generous donations will ensure the Handyperson Service can carry on providing help with small, practical tasks such as minor plumbing, small electrical jobs and carpentry for another year to come.  Putting up a handrail, replacing taps or installing a ramp to help prevent falls can make a huge difference to an older person managing alone.  Statistics show that the number of people over the age of 60 is expected to double by 2031 and the number of people in their eighties will have tripled.

Robert Hall, Director of thecentre:mk, on handing over the cheque to Age UK Milton Keynes said: “Age UK Milton Keynes provides such a great service to the Milton Keynes community and to many individual lives.  We are thrilled our shoppers donated so generously and hope this will provide an amazing boost to both finances and morale.”

Jane Palmer, Chief Executive of Age UK Milton Keynes said: “We are delighted to have been chosen as the beneficiary and are overwhelmed by the generosity of Christmas shoppers at thecentre:mk.  This donation will make a tremendous difference to the day-to-day lives of so many older people in our town and we look forward to working with thecentre:mk and its staff again in the future.”
