ST. DAVIDS, CARDIFF – WINNERS!

The great and good of the shopping centre commercialisation industry were out in force this morning at the British Council of Shopping Centres (BCSC) Opal Awards. At a presentation breakfast, St. David’s, Cardiff took the top spot among a competitive field as BCSC celebrated the best in class in commercialisation across the award categories.

The brainchild of the BCSC Commercialisation Committee, the Opal Awards are a chance to promote the unique commercial brand opportunities available in shopping malls by recognising and showcasing the best examples in the marketplace. The awards, held at King’s Place, focus on successful partnerships between shopping centres, retailers, brand agencies and others. The awards were presented by comedian Rob Beckett.

St. Davids, Cardiff led the way taking the coveted Aurora Award after achieving the highest score across all categories. Other winners include Prospect Shopping Centre, Kingston-upon-Hull, Westfield, London, Bluewater Shopping Centre, Kent and Whiterose Shopping Centre, Leeds. Among the highly commended were Whitefriars Shopping Centre, Canterbury and The Square Shopping Centre, Birmingham.

Overall, there were 14 Opal Awards, with six centres highly commended. The much sought after Stephen Rister Memorial Award for a young achiever was given to Stuart Mitchell of NewRiver Retail. Close behind him was Maria Kyriacou-Edwards of the Mall Walthamstow who received a highly commended.

Michael Green, Chief Executive, BCSC commented: “High quality commercialisation is essential to the success of shopping centres and that is why we introduced these awards, to celebrate the most innovative in the sector. I would like to thank the Commercialisation Committee and the Opal Awards Taskforce for their hard work in making this event such a success and would like to congratulate all the winners from today. I look forward to seeing the bar being raised even higher next year.”

Fiona Kyle, Chair, Opal Awards Taskforce, said: “The quality of entries continues to rise year on year and we have evolved the awards this year to introduce some new categories to further recognise the breadth of activities and to include a young achiever award named in honour of Stephen Rister.”
