Money Saving App Lights The Way With Coca-Cola and Heineken Beacon Promotions

The team at, trialled one beacon-triggered promotion within Birmingham that allowed users of the app to receive a free 330ml can of Coca-Cola, and another within Amsterdam that allowed users of the app to receive a free pint of Heineken.

The promotions worked when the beacon picked up a smartphone or smart wearable device within a specified range and location, sending a push notification to the gadget allowing the user to receive their free Coke or Heineken simply by clicking and opening up an onscreen barcode that could be scanned at the point of sale.

This follows on from the announcement back in July that vouchercloud was the first money-saving app in the UK to become fully compatible with the Apple Watch, enabling users to receive and redeem discounts using their smartwatch simply by having access to mobile data or a WiFi connection.

Robert Downes, Head of Instore Operations at, commented:

“Operationally, both trials were a success for vouchercloud users and at the point of sale for the participating merchant. We’re now looking to immediately scale the activity up with our national and global brand partners, especially in the FMCG space. The last 18 months have seen geo-fenced messaging become one of our most effective channels for increasing instore sales; now that we’re able to fine tune that proximity down to one metre, it opens up a lot more potential, especially for the larger department stores. Technically there is no need for any resource consuming integration, all we need are the beacon ID’s & locations and we’re ready to go.”
