Local businesses and authorities should work together to boost the UK’s high street

MORE than one in 10 town and city centre shops across the UK is vacant according to figures released by the British Retail Consortium this week.

The North of England has a vacancy rate of 13.1 per cent and a few months ago Altrincham town centre hit the headlines when it emerged a third of its shops are empty.

In a bid to put a stop to the high street decline local business and authorities in the Altrincham area have joined forces to launch a competition to help drive growth in the centre of the town.

Drive 2 Thrive Altrincham is a competition for people living and / or working in the area to come up with their own business proposition to boost Altrincham town centre.

Local firm Myers Lister Price Solicitors has launched a competition in partnership with Trafford Council. The winning business idea will be awarded a £1,000 cash prize, plus a ‘money can’t buy’ business mentorship programme with leading business and council figures in Altrincham.

Michael Lister, managing partner at Myers Lister Price Solicitors, said: “Altrincham is a great place to work and it’s been sad to see many businesses leave over the past few years. We think it’s about time the people who live and work in Altrincham have their say about the future of the town.

“TV programmes like Dragons’ Den have helped people realise what you can achieve with a good business idea backed by a sound strategy. If local businesses and councils across the North West join forces to help encourage local business and talent, I believe we could achieve great things to boost the regional economy.”

Drive 2 Thrive will run in partnership with the Sale and Altrincham Messenger and will be supported by business partners, RMS, Nikal and Trafford Council.
