Exclusive designs surface at Business Design Centre

Surface Design Show 2012 took place at the Business Design Centre in London from 7-9 February, bringing together over 3,600 architects, interior designers and specifiers in what was a highly bespoke, inspirational event for surface materials.  With 101 exhibitors displaying the very latest surface solutions, Surface Design Show is now firmly recognised as an excellent event for this sector.

As Helen Curl, Event Manager, said, “Surface Design Show definitely provides a niche offering to architects, interior designers and specifiers, with the opportunity to meet suppliers and see, touch and source innovative products from a select 100 exhibitors.”

The event’s Preview Evening kicked off with a lively debate, attended by a record 717 guests, on ‘Bodybuilding – Architectures of the Body’ hosted by Design Exchange Magazine’s Marianna Pestana, offering some profound and intriguing discussion on the architectural theory of how the body’s senses relate to space.  Speakers at the live debate were Nelly Ben Hayoun, Sitraka Rakotoniaina and Pedro Bandeira.

Among the many innovative new products launched at the show were Travertine World’s exclusive new metal/stone tile – a travertine stone beautifully impregnated with copper and brass, polished and lacquered to a top quality finish.  Beleaf, first time exhibitor in the UK, demonstrated how banana trunk fibre has been harvested to produce natural, eco, decorative panels and veneers with limitless application for architecture, design and joinery, in co-operation with WWF Italia and CMCC.  The stylish LUCEM illuminated concrete panel from Telling Architectural was a particularly striking exhibit – these fascinating panels can be used creatively for bespoke, elegant interior design.

The Future Thinking area and Trend Wall presented some eye-catching displays of innovative and groundbreaking products, such as Pavegen’s renewable energy flooring, which harvests the kinetic energy of footsteps to create illuminated flooring and Alicia Tam’s ‘invisible’ pattern algorithms which push the boundaries between what our eyes see and what our minds perceive.

The series of seminars and discussions also drew a record audience, but perhaps the highlight of the presentations was the PechaKucha Evening, hosted by AJ Specification’s Felix Mara, with a highly respected line up of 11 architects and designers presenting 20 slides for 20 seconds each, attracting an audience of more than 700.

Bookings are now being taken for the 2013 show, which will take place at the Business Design Centre, London from 5-7 February 2013.

The 2013 10th Anniversary show will also see the introduction of the Surface Design Awards, which will recognise excellent design and use of innovative surfaces in projects and buildings both in the UK and abroad – full details will be available in Spring 2012.
