Ducati rider launches new store at Manchester Airport with world-first airport test run

The first Ducati clothing and accessory airport store outside of Italy has opened in Terminal 1 at Manchester Airport. To mark the opening of the store, motorcycle rider Darren Fry has been involved in the making of a ground-breaking video that is released today.

During night operations, Fry undertook a series of test runs on Runway 2 at Manchester Airport in a film made by specialist design agency, Designate. Fry rides the bike through a passenger-free pier in Terminal 1 at Manchester Airport and even through the main shopping concourse into the store.

Darren Fry said: “It was an interesting idea that was put to me plus it’s not everyday you get an offer to test a Ducati bike out on a full length runway, at one of the country’s busiest airports. With that in mind, I jumped at the chance to be part of the project and to get to ride the bike on the airfield at night. I’m not sure how feasible it’ll be to keep Runway 2 as my full-time testing area but I have left that request on the table for the airport authorities!”

The Ducati’s new home will be in the Terminal 1 retail area close to the executive Escape Lounges at Manchester Airport. Over 10 million passenger journeys are made from Terminal 1 in a year, as the flagship terminal for the airport. The terminal is home to airlines such as Emirates, Etihad, Thomas Cook, easyJet, Turkish, Lufthansa and Swiss and other major retailers in the terminal include Lonely Planet, Biza’s duty free store, Giraffe and the new Grain Loft facility.

Stuart Wilson of Global Retailer, operators of the new Ducati airport shop, said: “It was an interesting opportunity presented to us by the airport and one we wanted to try out. There’s already a diverse audience of travellers in Terminal 1 and we wanted to use that captive audience to showcase the Ducati product. It’s the largest terminal in the North of England and hosts millions of passengers every year and we’re already seeing several motorcycle enthusiasts visit the new shop.”

The airport has experienced over 14 months of sustained passenger growth and is coming to the end of its busiest Summer in five years. Manchester Airport is the global gateway for the North of the UK and the largest airport outside London with over 200 destinations served by 65 airlines. Manchester’s long-haul catchment area places around 24 million people within a two-hour drive time – extending north through the Lake District into Scotland; east across Yorkshire and the North East; south to Birmingham and the Midlands; and west into Merseyside and Wales.

Beth Brewster, Retail Director for MAG, owners of Manchester Airport, said: “We continue to work on bringing big brands to the airport retail offer and welcome the addition of the Ducati store to Terminal 1. It’s a bit different for an airport but we believe it’s the right audience as there’s a large international contingent using Terminal 1. We’ve already seen that there’s a lot of motorbike enthusiasts using Manchester for travel and many have unsuccessfully tried to buy the display bike already.”
